About Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is a condition where a pregnant mother in her first trimester (the first 3 months of pregnancy) feels nausea and throws up often. The main cause is due to the high level of beta human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) hormone and estrogen. The beta HCG hormone inside a pregnant mother’s body can increase twice every week, especially in the early pregnancy. That’s why it’s common for Mama to experience morning sickness in the first trimester. This usually will go away by the second trimester even though some mothers can also experience morning sickness throughout the entire pregnancy.

It’s called morning sickness because the hormones will reach their peak in the morning, hence why the nausea and throwing up usually happens in the morning. However, this condition can also happen in the afternoon, and even at night. Besides hormones, morning sickness can also be triggered by low levels of blood sugar, Mama that often travels far, and stress.

If Mama experiences morning sickness during pregnancy, Mama doesn’t have to be worried. Because this condition is very common and does not pose any danger for both Mama and the fetus. Nevertheless, morning sickness can definitely cause headaches and weariness.

Reporting from Halodoc, many specialists believe that morning sickness is actually a good sign that indicates the nice and normal growth of placenta. This is also supported by research from National Institute of Child Health and Development which found that morning sickness can be a good sign of a healthy pregnancy.

According to the research, pregnant mothers that experience morning sickness has a 50%-70% lower risk of miscarriage than the mothers who don’t or rarely experience morning sickness. However, it doesn’t mean that Mama who doesn’t experience morning sickness is unhealthy. The difference is because every pregnancy is a personal experience and unique from one to another.

So, is morning sickness not dangerous? Yes, it’s not! Because the nausea and symptoms during morning sickness can help Mama to change your diet or eating habit which will improve a healthier pregnancy. However, some pregnant mothers who experience acute morning sickness may lead to hyperemesis gravidarum.

According to Alodokter, this susceptible condition causes dehydration and drastic weight loss. If Mama experiences hyperemesis gravidarum, then Mama needs intensive care to prevent any complications. That’s why during pregnancy, Mama is recommended to go to the doctor for a check up frequently.

After reading the explanations above, Mama now knows more about morning sickness. For Mama that’s currently experiencing morning sickness, let’s be grateful. However, for Mama that rarely or doesn’t experience it at all, there’s no need to worry because it doesn’t indicate any anomaly in your pregnancy. We hope that Mama and your baby will always be healthy.
